If children have more than 3 out of the following 9 signs, mother is recommended to supplement her children calcium immediately. Calcium plays a very important role in determining the bone and height development of the child. If you do not know signs of calcium deficiency and how to supplement calcium, you cannot detect whether your child is calcium deficient or not. During early life, children need a lot of nutrients - especially calcium - for the development of bones, joints and other organs in the body. The calcium amount provided for and absorbed by the child is not enough will lead to calcium deficiency. Children with calcium deficiency will become stunted, growing retardation and hardly be tall. How to recognize that your child is deficient in calcium? Followings are 9 special signs:

1. Trouble falling asleep, insomnia, disturbed sleep.

Many mothers after birth often fall into a state of crisis and depression because their new born is just to awake at mid night and does not want to sleep again although they try to soothe the babies to sleep. Even some mothers are more distressed when their infant can stay up overnight from 10pm to 4 am the next day. If your child has signs of trouble falling asleep, insomnia, suddenly awakening at mid night, crying constantly, you may think of calcium deficiency. Fear at night is one of the most distinguishing characteristics of these children.

2. Nightly sweat:

Children with calcium deficiency often sweat at night. The most obvious sign is wet hair after waking up.

3. Depression

Children with calcium deficiency are often upset, crying and restless. They may have anorexia, no interest in their surroundings, psychological retardation.

4. Delayed tooth formation, uneven teeth:

Calcium metabolism is not good; calcium deficiency leads to delayed tooth formation. However, uneven spacing between teeth is a symptom of calcium deficiency. Though some children deficient in calcium also have timely tooth formation, there are deformities in their teeth which are skewed, uneven, staggered.

5. Hair loss in head circumference.

Children with calcium deficiency often get sweaty and hair loss, especially hair being lost in their head circumference where it touches the pillow. It may be signs of calcium deficiency.

Mothers must recognize the symptom of calcium deficiency in children for timely calcium supplement.

6. Retarded growing of the fontanels:

Normal time for fontanels development of infant is from 12-18 months. However, children with calcium deficiency often have retarded growing of the fontanels, leading to deformity of skull.

7. These children have impaired physical development, delayed walk, deformed bones and joints.

The most prominent characteristics of under one year children with calcium deficiency are found in their legs: legs bowing out (bowlegs), muscle loose and soft. Due to their poor bone density, there may be delay for their initial crawling, standing, walking.

8. At risk of pneumonia; calcium deficiency will lead to decreased muscle tone. The impaired operation of the respiratory muscle makes the children more risky to pneumonia and bronchitis.

9. Muscle tendons are too irritated: Children with calcium deficiency often have increased neuromuscular stimulation. The constant contraction of laryngeal muscle may cause difficult breathing, diaphragmatic spasm causing hiccups, stomach muscle contractions cause splashing milk, the intestinal and bladder muscle spasms causing repeated urine.

Once the child has more than 3 out of 9 above signs, he is advised to take supplementary calcium. Milk, yogurt and other dairy products are ideal sources of calcium which is easily absorbed. In addition to milk, mother can provide the child eggs or tofu which is very rich in both calcium and protein. While cooking pig bone soup for the child, mother is recommended to add a few drops of vinegar which will promote calcium absorption.
